Hey guys,
Isn't it the greatest feeling when you do something that you thought you were not capable? Or maybe you do something and it turns out you did better than expected?
I don't know if I shared this with you, but I'm afraid of heights! I don't remember being afraid all my life, but it felt like I woke up and suddenly I had this huge fear of looking down. I get all dizzy and stuff too! I would def not do bungee jumping or anything similar to that.
A couple of weeks ago, I went back to Bolivia and this time it was to participate in one of the coolest trips that Bolivia has to offer Estrada de la Muerte, also known as the Death Road.
The Death Road is composed of 54 km and you start at 4,700 m in the mountains and finish at 1,100 m by bike! The crazy thing is that you drive down these abyss mountains where you can literally fall off...and die...or get really hurt!
Our trip began 6:30 in the morning when we went to meet our guides on this café. We had to sign this paper accepting medical treatment in case we got injured...I began feeling kinda dizzy just imagining what was going to happen! At 7 am we marched out the door and a cute old school bus was waiting for us with bikes on top that seemed like pros!
About our guide: the name of the company is called Gravity and they are considered the best guides for biking in all sort of circumstances. 1 of the guides does this for years all over the world, the second one began driving in the abyss mountains and he knows everything that there is to know regarding driving! And the third guy also knows a lot about biking but he also takes awesome pics!
1 hour up and down the mountains we finally get to our starting point. Its cold, I would say about 10 degrees. I had 3 jackets on and the Gravity pants and jacket gear ready to go. The guides teach us different things to know about our bike in terms of safety: for example, NEVER stop abruptly the bike or else you will fly away! When passing in front of a stone, make sure you don't lower your velocity, use googles and drive on the right side in one straight line.
First 5 km of the bike ride: very cold, mixed with a lot of rain which made it colder! At first I was very scared to go down the mountain since the bike picks speed up very fast but after a while, I started getting a hang of how it works! We would stop often for hot tea, to look out on the amazing views, pictures and even so the guides could explain to us what were the next steps and what prepare ourselves for.
Towards the middle of our trip, it started getting warmer, sun came out too! One of the highlights of our trip was going under waterfalls by bike and crossing rivers! At the end of the trip we did a toast in a local bar of a small city. Got splashed with water balloons by the local kids. We had lunch at a close zoo and we finally got back to the city at 9 pm.
At the end we made friends with all the tour guides who kindly sent us pictures of the trip. We also made friends with the rest of the group which in total we were 10-12 people: Germany, Canada, US, Peru, etc
Overall it was a fun experience! I highly recommend to everyone but during rain season, bring proper clothes for rain! Below I will attach the link to Gravity's website: http://www.gravitybolivia.com/index.php?mod=homeb
Stay tuned for more!
